SOME BASICS:

There are more than 400 ski and snowboard areas in the U.S. Many are not far from metropolitan areas and a lot closer to where you live than you may think. The Find A Resort tab on this web site can help you find a location near you.

Learning to ski or snowboard has never been easier and more affordable! Beginner learning programs offered by ski areas generally include a lesson taught by a professional instructor, equipment to get you on the snow, and a lift ticket to get you up the hill.

When starting out, it is best to take lessons from a professional instructor. Seek out the resort's ski and snowboard school. The folks at the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI) are there to help you. Lesson programs are available for adults and youths. Many venues also have a day care/lesson package for very young children. Make Winter Fun!

Not sure if skiing or snowboarding are for you? Ask your friends.

Skiers and snowboarders love to introduce their friends and family to the sport. That way they have more people to hit the slopes with! These are social sports and great ways to meet interesting people. They require some athleticism but professional instructors have a lot of great methods and secret tips for getting you sliding comfortably in no time! Looking for more friends to join you? There are hundreds of ski and snowboard clubs throughout the U.S. Search online for a club near you in the Clubs tab elsewhere in this Tips section or visit the National Ski Club Federation at www.NSCF.org.
